Globally, the International Nurses Day occurs each year on 12 May, the birth date of Florence Nightingale. In 2021, the International Council of Nurses aims to recognise the leadership of the nursing profession worldwide in providing a vision for future healthcare. Nurses play a critical role in helping GenV reach its goals, explains GenV Area Manager, field team support officer and nurse, Steph Reynolds. WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AT GENV? I have two roles GenV. One role is the Area Manager of the Werribee Mercy recruitment team. My second role is as a support officer for the field team. WHY DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH GENV? I had previously worked in healthcare, childcare, and research. GenV was a great opportunity to bring all 3 areas I was passionate about together. It was an opportunity to help out on a bigger scale and make a positive impact on future generations. Why do you think being a nurse helps with your role? As a nurse, I have learned to build rapport and trust with families in sometimes very stressful circumstances. I have also developed a good ability to make complex information easy for everyone to understand. This helps in my role at GenV, as approaching families soon after their baby is born is a special time for new parents. I am able to make families feel safe and well-informed, to help them understand what joining GenV would look like for their family. HOW DO YOU THINK GENV WILL HELP CURRENT AND FUTURE GENERATIONS? I believe GenV has the potential to improve many health outcomes, making this generation and future generations happier, healthier, and able to achieve more in life. I also hope that GenV will narrow the inequality gap for those underrepresented communities. WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE THAT YOU have for nurses going through training now? I would tell someone training to be a nurse that it is not always easy earning to care for people or to witness people in their most vulnerable moments. But when you learn to develop those skills it will change who you are as a person in a positive way. You will learn to be stronger, calmer, more empathetic and observant in life.
