International Women’s Day 2025 & Women’s History Month

On International Women’s Day (8 March) and throughout Women’s History Month, we celebrate the incredible women who drive GenV’s research and fieldwork every day.

This year’s theme, Accelerate Action, envisions a future free from bias, stereotypes, and discrimination—one that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive. At GenV, we’re committed to fostering a workplace where everyone feels valued and empowered to thrive.

Meet some of the women making an impact in our team.

Meet GenV Business Analyst Swapnali Tuscano

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AT GENV?

I work as a Business Analyst at GenV.  My responsibilities include acting as a bridge between technical teams and study team. Mapping out current workflows and identifying inefficiencies. Facilitating workshops and discussions to align with GenV’s goals.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF WORKING AT GENV?

My favourite part of working at GenV is my work with stakeholders to identify challenges, gather insights, and implement solutions is something I truly enjoy. My favorite part would be contributing to meaningful research that impacts children’s health and wellbeing.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS ONE WAY WE CAN HELP TO SUPPORT WOMEN IN THEIR CAREERS?

GenV has a flexible and inclusive work environment which supports women. I would suggest having a mentorship program that pairs women with experienced professionals to help them grow in their career.

Meet GenV Senior Research Officer Susan Clifford

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AT GENV?

I lead the ‘GenV and Me’ team, who create the surveys we send to participants, to tell us about how their family is going. This includes helping to design and build the ‘GenV and Me’ smartphone App – something that’s pretty fun and I never imagined doing when I started my career.

With the wider GenV team, I also help make sure our participants’ experience in GenV is positive and easy, and shape the datasets that researchers will use to make new discoveries.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF WORKING AT GENV?

I love my unique role, which is a great mix of scientific research and creativity. I’m trying to solve a puzzle with no single right answer. There’s no end to the list of topics we could ask parents about. The exciting challenge of my role is to think what are the most important topics to ask parents about, when is the best time in a child’s life to ask, and how to ask the questions so they are both easy for parents to answer and give researchers the information they need to answer big questions. It might not be obvious, but lots of thought goes into how we ask every question.

I also love working with passionate and talented people who make up the GenV team, it is like working with your friends.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS ONE WAY WE CAN HELP TO SUPPORT WOMEN IN THEIR CAREERS?

Regardless of anyone’s role at work, getting to know them as a person. That’s taking time to understand what excites them, what stresses they are dealing with at and away from work, what an awesome job or career looks like for them, and who they are outside of work.

Over my last 15 years working at MCRI, I’ve benefited from my managers and peers getting to know me. Even short chats have led to me getting new opportunities to extend my skills (and travel!), work flexibly when needed, and ultimately have a career that aligns with my values.

The better we know our colleagues, the better we can support them.

Meet GenV Research Coordinator Amy Walsh

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AT GENV?

I’m the GenV Research Collaborations Coordinator – I help connect researchers with different GenV teams to plan and run collaborative research projects. These projects might involve collecting new data from GenV participants, studying existing GenV data or biosamples, or inviting GenV families to take part in research.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF WORKING AT GENV?

It’s motivating to work with people with such a range of perspectives and expertise to build this unique project with the potential to make a real impact on families’ health and quality of life.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS ONE WAY WE CAN HELP TO SUPPORT WOMEN IN THEIR CAREERS?

Offering flexibility including hybrid working arrangements, part-time and flexible hours and normalising taking personal leave. Creating a compassionate workplace where people feel trusted to balance work and life makes a big difference, especially to women.
